Age divisions

Youth events use USA Wrestling age divisions, and a wrestler’s division comes from birth year alone. Subtract the birth year from the first year of the season. That number is the wrestler’s division age for the whole season.

A season runs September 1 through August 31 and is named for its two years, such as 2026-27. The app takes the season’s first year (2026 for 2026-27) and subtracts the birth year:

  • Born 2017, season 2026-27: 2026 minus 2017 is 9, so the division age is 9.
  • The wrestler goes in the youngest division whose oldest age is at least that number. 10U covers ages 8 and 9, so a wrestler born 2017 is 10U.

The birthday itself doesn’t matter. Everyone born in the same year is in the same division for the whole season, including spring and summer events.

Division Division ages
6U 5 and under
8U 6 and 7
10U 8 and 9
12U 10 and 11
14U 12 and 13
16U 14 and 15

Each division is two birth years wide. There’s no 7U or 9U.

Division Born in
6U 2021 or later
8U 2019 or 2020
10U 2017 or 2018
12U 2015 or 2016
14U 2013 or 2014
16U 2011 or 2012

Wrestlers born in 2010 or earlier are past the youth age divisions.

Each new season moves every row one year later. In 2027-28, for example, 10U is 2018 or 2019.

The events page does the math for you.

  1. Open the events page and pick Youth and club in the Level dropdown at the top of the filters.
  2. Open More filters and type the birth year in Born in.
  3. The hint under the box shows the division for this season, such as “10U this season”.
  4. Choose Show 10U (or whichever division it found) to filter the list to events that offer it.

If the hint doesn’t change, the birth year is outside 6U through 16U.

When you post a youth event, you check the age divisions it offers under Age divisions. The form’s hint, “USA Wrestling divisions by birth year”, means families can match their wrestler with the table above. You don’t need to list birth years yourself; the app keeps them current each season.
