Divisions and age groups

A division is a level plus a gender category, like High school Girls. Hosts pick the divisions their event has, teams pick the divisions they’re looking for, and search filters match on them.

Boys/Co-ed Girls
High school High school Boys/Co-ed High school Girls
Middle school Middle school Boys/Co-ed Middle school Girls
Youth Youth Boys/Co-ed Youth Girls
  • Boys/Co-ed is one category. Boys divisions are open to girls by rule, so there’s no separate co-ed option.
  • Girls means girls only.
  • An event can have any mix of the six. Any organization type can host any level, for example a high school hosting a youth tournament.
  • Middle school is grades 6 to 8. High school can include grades 7 to 12.

On cards and event pages, divisions show as short tags like “HS Girls · Varsity, JV” or “Youth Boys/Co-ed · 8U · 10U · 12U”.

High school divisions list Varsity, JV, or both. At least one is required for each high school division. Middle school and youth divisions don’t use varsity/JV.

Youth divisions use USA Wrestling’s two-year age divisions. Events must check at least one for each youth division.

Division Ages Born, 2026-27 season
6U 5 and under 2021 or later
8U 6 to 7 2019 to 2020
10U 8 to 9 2017 to 2018
12U 10 to 11 2015 to 2016
14U 12 to 13 2013 to 2014
16U 14 to 15 2011 to 2012

The age is the age a wrestler reaches in the season’s first calendar year (2026 for the 2026-27 season). Birth years move up by one each season.

  1. On the Events page, pick Youth and club in the Level dropdown at the top of the filters.
  2. Open More filters and type a four-digit year in Born in, like 2017.
  3. The hint under the field shows the division, like “10U this season”.
  4. Select Show 10U to filter by it.

A birth year older than the 16U range shows no division.

Search filters for Level, Gender, Varsity / JV, and Age division must all match the same division of an event.

  • Girls + JV finds an event with a girls division that has JV. It doesn’t find an event whose only JV is in the boys division.
  • Youth + Girls + 10U finds an event whose Youth Girls division offers 10U.
  • Picking several age divisions finds events with any one of them.

The Teams Looking board works the same way, with one difference: a youth post that names no age divisions matches any age.

Hosts post divisions two ways, and both work:

  • One event, several divisions: one posting with, say, High school Boys/Co-ed and High school Girls.
  • Separate events: the same tournament posted twice, once per division, because that’s how it’s set up in USA Bracketing or TrackWrestling. Postings from the same host with overlapping dates list each other under “Also at … on These Dates”.

Status and the wait list apply to the whole event. If one division fills and another doesn’t, separate events let each have its own status.

  • Each division can be listed once per event or post.
  • Each event needs at least one division.
  • A division can have its own bracket link. See Flyers and links.
  • On a Teams Looking post, youth age divisions are optional. Leave them all unchecked if any age works.

Our Season uses your team’s own divisions: Varsity, JV, Girls varsity, Girls JV, 9th grade, and, for a middle school, Middle school. Team sizes have no 9th grade line: count 9th graders under JV or varsity. They’re separate from the event divisions on this page. See Our Season.

Step 3, Who Can Come, of the event form and the What You’re Looking For section of the post form. Filters are on the Events page and the Teams Looking board.
