Distance and drive time

Set a starting point and every event shows how far away it is. Add a Within limit to hide events that are too far. Anyone can use it; organization members get their own organization as the starting point automatically.

Distances are drive times when the site’s routing service is available, like “1 hr 20 min (82 mi)”. When it isn’t, the site shows straight-line miles instead, like “about 45 mi (straight line)”. The line above the results says which one you’re seeing, for example “drive times from Pierz High School”.

  1. On the Events page, open More filters in the filters on the left (on a phone, tap Filters in the results bar first). Distance from is the first filter in it.
  2. Type a 5-digit ZIP code or a city, like Pierz, MN, and press Enter. Or select Use my location and allow your browser to share it.
  3. Pick a limit in Within, which appears under it once there’s a starting point, to hide events farther away. Leave it on Any distance to see distances without hiding anything.
  4. Set Sort to Distance to see the closest events first.

If you’re a member of an organization, the starting point is the organization you’re acting for (shown in the header). The hint under the field says “From” and the organization’s name. Typing a ZIP code or city replaces it for that search.

A city without a state uses the state of the page you’re on.

With drive times With straight-line miles
30 min drive 25 miles
1 hr drive 50 miles
1 hr 30 min drive 75 miles
2 hr drive 100 miles
3 hr drive 150 miles

With a Within limit set, results include events across the state line, and the hint under Within reads “Includes nearby states”. Teams cross state lines, so a search from a border town shows events in the next state too. Without a limit, results stay in the page’s state.

An event page shows the distance from the last starting point you used on the Events page (remembered in your browser), or from your organization. It appears under Where.

  • A place outside the routing map, or with no route, shows straight-line miles even when the rest show drive times. A Within limit keeps it when it’s close enough in a straight line.
  • Use my location is rounded to about 100 meters and stored in the page address, so a shared link includes it.
  • An event whose address hasn’t been located yet has no distance, and a Within limit leaves it out.
  • If a starting point can’t be found, you’ll see “We couldn’t find “…”. Try a 5-digit ZIP code, or a city like “Pierz, MN”.”
  • If your organization has no location on file, you’ll see a note, and no distances show until you type a ZIP code or city. An organization admin can add a street address on the organization’s settings page.
  • If the routing service is down during a search, that search falls back to straight-line miles.

Distance from sits under the other filters, in the filters sidebar on the Events page and the Teams Looking board, and in the Filters sheet on a phone. The distance column appears in the List view and the CSV download once a starting point is set.
